Students go "Loco" for Taco Tuesday

If you have classes on Tuesdays, chances are you’ve come across the long line of students at the east walkway waiting to indulge in Taco Tuesday made possible by campus dining’s Street Food.

Street Food is a student outreach program that provides a more affordable food option to the campus dining experience, and it seems to be successful with its menu variety and student-friendly low prices.

The meats offered include carne asada (beef), chicken and carnitas (pork). Not a meat-eater? No problem! Street Food’s tacos also offer the vegan-friendly option of soy chorizo

Each taco is $1.75, quesadillas are $3, and quesadillas with meat are $5 each. A three-taco combo which also comes with a delicious, thirst-quenching agua fresca is only $7, but you have the option to substitute the three tacos for a meat quesadilla instead. An agua fresca is $2.25, and flavors range weekly from guava, passionfruit, watermelon, and traditional horchata.

Japanese Law student Makoto Takahashi is a big fan of the Mexican street-style tacos, claiming she gets in line every Tuesday, no matter how long it is.

“My favorite part is this,” Takahashi said, pointing at the cilantro/onion mix. “We can take as much as we need — well, how much I want.”

When asked about how the tacos compared to the food offered inside the Student Loker Union, Takahashi said there was no comparison.

“Taco Bell has a Taco Tuesday as well,” she said. “Tacos are $1 plus tax, but I think these are better because the ingredients are fresh and you can see the meat in front of you, so it’s better.”

Street tacos are so popular on campus that some students wish campus dining offered them on a daily basis. As Kinesiology major Jose Hernandez bit into a grilled jalapeño, he entertained the idea of starting a petition to have them every day and would collect the signatures from the mass of students waiting in line next Tuesday.

“As a Mexican, nothing inside the school cafeteria calls my attention,” said Hernandez. “When I saw there was a legit taco stand with legit Mexicans behind the grill, I got excited. After trying these, there’s no going back to Taco Bell.”

Street Food’s tacos are in the east walkway every Tuesday from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
